Biography

Born in 1959, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ is an Indian politician and a famous author and poet. He was first elected to public office in 1991 at the Karnaprayag Legislative Assembly by winning elections in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He was re-elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly twice and held the position of cabinet minister consecutively for two terms. Currently, he is serving as the Union Minster of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and Member of Lok Sabha from the Haridwar constituency. He had served as the fifth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal is, by his basic nature, a man of literary interests. So far, he has authored over five dozen poems, novels, section poetry, short stories related to culture, tourism, travel and memoirs, children’s stories, and self-development related literature. His famous works have lent him a prominent position in the world of Hindi literature. His works are filled with the ‘bhava’ of patriotism. This is the reason that his name is written in golden letters among other national laureates. Dr. Nishank’s first poetry collection ‘Samarpan’ was published in the year 1983. Since its publication, there has been no looking back. Despite being engaged in various national commitments, he continues to write. Because of the sheer relevance and originality of his works, his works have been translated into multiple global languages, such as German, English, French and Nepali, and various Indian languages, such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, etc.

His literature has also been incorporated in the syllabus of Madras University, Chennai University and Hamburg University, Germany. Various educationists such as Dr. Shyamdhar Tiwari, Dr. Vinay Dabral, Dr. Nagendra, Dr. Savita Mohan, Dr. Nand Kishore, Dr. Yogendra Nath Sharma ‘Arun’, and Dr. Sudhakar Tiwari, have published review books on the works of Dr. ‘Nishank’. His literature is being studied and researched at various national and international universities, such as Garhwal University, Kumaun University, Sagar University, Madras University, Hamburg University, Germany, Lucknow University and Meerut University.
